I welded it from steel, mostly bent rebar that has weathered into a warm rusty reddish brown. A single length rises off a heavy steel base plate in an S curve, then branches into loops that fan out like wings and a body of tight zig-zag bends. The head is the part that makes people grin: a flat piece of brushed steel cut into a jagged beak and a three-pointed comb, perched on a curled rebar neck. The welds are left visible on purpose, because the making is part of the story. Every bit of steel was salvaged, and there will never be another one exactly like it.
